Spain customs & Transfer of Residence: step by step

Required registration: NIE + Padrón registration

  1. 1

Obtain your NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero)

The NIE is mandatory before customs clearance. Apply at a Spanish consulate in the US or at a Policía Nacional office after arrival — clearance agents cannot file without it.

  2. 2

    Register on the Padrón municipal

Your empadronamiento certificate proves your new Spanish address and is required as part of the Cambio de Residencia customs file.

  3. 3

File the Franquicia por traslado de residencia

Submit through the Agencia Tributaria with a Baja Consular or proof of 12 months of continuous residence outside the EU, plus a valued inventory in Spanish.

  4. 4

Prove 6 months of prior ownership

Every item must have been owned and used for at least six months before shipping, and must stay in your possession for 12 months after import.

Import VAT avoided with relief

Filed with Agencia Tributaria (AEAT) via Franquicia por traslado de residencia (AEAT).
